Something wonderful happened a few nights ago. I was working with the modular synth and I began to tweak a patch I had just put together. I did a little of this and a little of that and things began to fall into place. It was becoming interestingly rhythmic with nice variations. I let it continue to play while getting ready to shut things down for the night. While doing all that I suddenly realized how much the music was beginning to affect me and I recognized that this was something special. I setup the camera and recording gear thinking it would be a good one to post.
I pressed record and began doing live tweaks walking back and forth from one side of the modular to the other, because the camera and tripod were in the middle.
And then there it was… like magic.
Everything effortlessly fell into place, and out came a 10 minute track, fully formed that I knew was going to be the first of many for a new project. Finally, after years of searching for a direction and looking for something new, there it was. When I played the track back the title instantly came to me, then the album title appeared, and finally the musical style popped into my mind.
It was an epiphany, one of those things that happens very rarely. But when it does it’s incredibly easy. Like winning the lottery, it just happens. Yet no amount of trying or forcing can make this kind of event come to be. Attempting to will it into existence is usually hard, frustrating, and ultimately impossible. But every once in a long while, it’s easy. That’s how it went this time, and I ended up not getting to sleep until 4am.
The new album is “Excursions In Time”, and the first track is “Crossing The Sahara”.
